2022 was another very challenging year, with global and multi-faceted challenges becoming more visible than ever. The topic of energy was particularly in focus. Reductions in our energy use therefore were in prime focus and a backdrop to the development of our sustainability strategy during the year. Read more about our key projects and product developments through 2022 that have added value for climate protection, society and our customers.
2022 was a challenging year for Haltermann Carless as it faced significant headwinds from unforeseen global and national events. Energy was a key topic throughout the year, with pricing and security an ever present threat as a result of the war in Ukraine. Reductions in our energy use therefore were in prime focus and a backdrop to the development of our sustainability strategy during the year. This strategy directly addressed our responsibilities around the environment and social governance and was created to provide support for, and in line with, the 17 UN sustainable development goals
Sustainability is not new within Haltermann Carless and we have long been committed to sustainable and resource saving solutions for our customers. Our newly developed strategy though builds upon this history, providing greater focus, and has led to a number of projects, product developments through 2022 that have added value for climate protection, society and our customers.
Supporting energy efficiency - our Pentanes, when used as blowing agents in insulation materials, are responsible for high insulation performance and thus contribute to the reduction of CO2 emissions. For instance, they ensure high energy efficiency in buildings, pipes, refrigerators or refrigeration logistics and thus help to achieve climate protection targets.
Advancing alternative energy sources - as organic process media with a low boiling point, our Pentanes play an important role. They enable the further use of large amounts of waste heat at low temperature levels in so-called ORC plants (Organic Rankine Cycle) - and thus sustainable energy generation or post-combustion power generation through process heat from various industries.
Put through its paces - every year we have our sustainability activities externally audited to make sure we are on the right track and to identify potential for improvement. For the third time in a row, we have been awarded EcoVadis Gold status for sustainable management. We are very proud to receive this certification which motivates us to drive forward the transformation to an increasingly more sustainable company.
Sustainable motorsport - it sounds like a contradiction, but we already supply the automotive and motorsport industry with sustainable fuels made from up to 100% ISCC and RED II certified components, enabling CO2 reduction according to international standards. With our decades of expertise in fuel development, we can and do contribute to sustainable mobility.
Certified mass balance solutions - with our new ISCC PLUS certification for both our German sites, we offer our customers an immediate and cost-efficient solution on their way to a holistic bioeconomy. This approach using consistent and certified data is again a step towards achieving verifiable emission reductions in the supply chain and thus supporting the European Green Deal.
Healthcare focus - the Corona pandemic has reminded us of the value of our health and the importance of efficient and safe medicines. Haltermann Carless' high performance solvents for the pharmaceutical industry are critical auxiliaries in the active ingredient production of various medicines. We also support the Corona vaccine and drug production with our high-purity hydrocarbons.
Developing our sites - Haltermann Carless celebrated the inauguration of the new hydrogenation plant at the German Speyer site together with prominent politicians. This investment in the future enables, for example, the production of high-purity products for the pharmaceutical industry or the expansion of other innovative business areas, such as the manufacturing of Sustainable Aviation Fuels (SAF).
