Haltermann Carless is a leading supplier of sustainable hydrocarbons for the Life Science, Mobility, Energy and Industry sectors. Production takes place at two German sites, among others, and requires a corresponding amount of electricity. With the support of the local municipal utility, this is now being made more environmentally friendly - with wind energy from the region.
Haltermann Carless employs around 120 people at the German Speyer site, which was commissioned in 1965. Among other things, nine distillation columns, a loading and mixing station, 175 tanks and 600 pumps run here. Additionally, another production site in Hamburg. This requires a lot of energy. In the search for a sustainable and regional form of energy that also offers price stability, those responsible at Haltermann Carless got into dialogue with the local municipal utility called Stadtwerke Speyer (SWS).
"We were looking for a wind farm in our network that offers fixed prices," explains Christoph Doll, Team Leader Business Customer Sales/Energy Trading at Stadtwerke Speyer (SWS). He found what he was looking for at the Waldkönigen wind farm in Daun in the Eifel region, around 200 km away from Speyer. A contract was signed with the plant operator WEAG Future Energies that benefits all parties: "WEAG benefits because energy generation in older wind farms is no longer subsidised. Haltermann Carless benefits from stable prices and energy supplies and we as SWS act as a link between the end customer and the supplier," explains Daniel Simonte, Head of Sales/Trading at SWS.
Around 40 per cent of the electricity required - an annual total of around 4,500,000 kilowatt hours is assumed - can be used by Haltermann Carless from the Waldkönigen wind farm. The remaining sustainably sourced electricity is procured via the municipal utility on the spot or futures market.

Just as Haltermann Carless wants to support its customers with → innovative and sustainable product solutions to reduce their carbon footprint, the company is also committed to reducing the greenhouse gas emissions of its own business activities and the entire value chain. The use of wind energy from the region is therefore simply a logical step for the chemical company.
"Haltermann Carless aims not only to use sustainable raw materials and develop future-proof products, but also to organise production in an environmentally friendly way", emphasises Dr Maximilian Budde, responsible for Corporate Development & Sustainability.
For him, it is essential that the electricity is generated and used regionally, which represents further added value and reduces greenhouse gas emissions in the supply chain. "After all, over 1,600 tonnes of CO₂ can be saved annually by feeding wind energy into the grid", says Budde.
"Haltermann Carless is one of the first companies to integrate a wind farm into the company", emphasises Daniel Simonte. He is hoping for followers in the business world to further expand his sustainable "Business Flex" product. Customised solutions can and should be found for all interested parties.
Haltermann Carless can cover an important part of its energy requirements at its production sites with wind energy from the local region. Just like Stadtwerke Speyer (SWS), the chemical company is hoping that others will follow suit in order to achieve greater sustainability in the economy. It works better than you think!
