n-Nonane is almost insoluble in water, but shows very good solubility or unlimited miscibility with many organic solvents such as higher alcohols, ethers, esters, aromatics or chlorinated hydrocarbons.
There are other paraffins with similar properties, including n-decane, n-undecane and n-dodecane. They hardly differ chemically, but have slightly different physical properties. Above all, they have higher boiling and flash points

Like all alkanes (paraffins, saturated hydrocarbons), higher paraffins are a very good solvent for non-polar substances, fats and oils. However, the higher the chain length, the lower the dissolving power.
As a test fluid, n-nonane is used to calibrate injection nozzles for engines.
n-Nonane and n-decane can be used as entraining agents in distillation technology, for example, to separate water or other small, polar molecules such as acetic acid from reactions.
For special printing purposes (banknotes, revenue stamps), n-dodecane is used as a printing ink oil.
