We say goodbye to 2024 and look back positively on the journey of Haltermann Carless. The past year was marked by our RACE transformation programme and important milestones on our journey towards a sustainable future. Here are a few highlights and a look at key targets for 2025.
Embracing change and driving sustainability: The Haltermann Carless Group
The year 2024 stands for many positive things:
- Sustainability certifications:
In 2024, Haltermann Carless is again among the top 3% of all chemical companies evaluated in the EcoVadis rating. At the same time, we have achieved a new goal in motorsport: the highest FIA Three Star Environmental accreditation! - Our parent company, HCS Group, became Haltermann Carless Group this year:
After a year of belonging to ICIG, we have taken this small but important step. Now, all future-oriented activities will be bundled under the strong Haltermann Carless brand. - A strong investor, opening up optimal perspectives for Haltermann Carless:
With ICIG, we have a strong partner from the chemical industry at our side, whose extensive know-how and resources we use to further strengthen our position as ‘Pioneers in Hydrocarbons’. - Reducing greenhouse gas emissions in all areas:
Our sustainable hydrocarbons offer our customers a wide range of advantages. But we also pay attention to sustainability in our production: for example, the electricity for our largest European production plants is generated from certified renewable sources. Several Haltermann Carless' achievements:
1. Haltermann Carless excels in motor sports with the FIA Three-Star Environmental certificate
We are proud to have received the highest sustainability award from the Fédération Internationale de l'Automobile (FIA), the governing body of global motorsport. This motivates us and shows that sustainability and performance of racing fuels can be reconciled! Haltermann Carless racing fuels, including Carless Hiperflo and ETS Racing Fuels, are leading the way in meeting the demanding fuel requirements of the motorsport industry.
2. NSF H1-certified Pilot® base oils for safe food production
With the newly certified Pilot® oils, Haltermann Carless offers a comprehensive range of high-quality base oils that carry the renowned NSF H1 quality seal. This certificate confirms the food compatibility of lubricating and process oils, which are essential in food and beverage production. For maximum food safety, NSF H1-certified base oils, such as our Pilot® oils, are the optimal choice.
3. High level of expertise in polymeric flocculation aids for water treatment
Our low-viscosity base oils also play a crucial role in water treatment and help to accelerate processes and optimise costs. The new Haltermann Carless Pilot® H oils serve as carrier fluids for polyacrylamide emulsions and are therefore an important component of flocculation aids for municipal and industrial wastewater treatment plants. In addition to their technical improvements, the base oils are characterised by a low aromatic content and biodegradability.
4. Sustainable aviation is increasingly becoming a reality with Sustainable Aviation Fuel (SAF)
With the introduction of the SAF quota for airlines, the need to advance technologies for the production of SAF is growing. The good news is that, as a pioneer, we are deeply committed to sustainable aviation and want to enable the production of Sustainable Aviation Fuels (SAF) with the Alcohol-to-Jet (AtJ) process.
5. Aromatic solvents with (extra) low naphthalene content for agrochemicals
Our aromatic solvents with low naphthalene content offer manufacturers of crop protection products and agrochemicals decisive advantages: increased safety, reduced environmental risks and compliance with strict regulations – without compromising on performance. Since our Caromax® LN and XLN offer almost identical performance to naphthalene-based alternatives, manufacturers can reduce the naphthalene content in their crop protection products and agrochemicals without compromising on effectiveness.
6. Key product Cyclopentane shapes modern insulation
Cyclopentane, one of our key products for the global market, is used as a blowing agent in polyurethane (PU) insulation foams to make buildings and refrigerators more energy efficient – thanks to its high insulating properties. Pentanes are therefore the most important alternative to the banned chlorofluorocarbons (CFCs) and hydrofluorocarbons (HFCs) with high global warming potential, as well as to the substances covered by PFAS (per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances).
7. High-purity solvents for the pharmaceutical industry
We offer over 50 years of expertise in the production of high-purity solvents for the pharmaceutical industry. The pharmaceutical industry values our three core competencies: the highest standards of quality and purity, availability and continuity of supply, and tailor-made product solutions.

Forward-looking projects of Haltermann Carless in Harwich, UK: Firefly Green Fuels and RWE Hydrogen
The Haltermann Carless production site in Harwich, UK, focuses on tailor-made customer solutions for fuels and aromatic solvents and is ideally positioned in the field of contract processing. But that's not all...
- In collaboration with RWE, one of the UK's largest power generators, Haltermann Carless has launched an ambitious project to develop a green hydrogen plant in Harwich. The planned plant will be located on the Haltermann Carless production site.
- We are also pleased to announce our partnership with Firefly Green Fuels. A pilot plant for the production of sustainable aviation fuel (SAF) from sewage sludge is being built at our Harwich site. The pilot plant is scheduled to start operations in 2027, followed by a commercial plant by 2029.
