Isododecane is a branched hydrocarbon from the group of the alkanes and has a chemical formula C12H26. However, it is actually a mixture of different isomers of dodecane, usually one molecule is the main isomer, 2,2,4,6,6-pentamethylheptane. This is also the technically most important one.

Isododecane is almost insoluble in water, but shows very good solubility or unlimited miscibility with many organic solvents such as higher alcohols, ethers, esters, aromatics or chlorinated hydrocarbons.
The mixture of isododecane typically contains more than 80% 2,2,4,6,6-pentamethylheptane. This is for technical reasons. Because the molecule is so desirable, it is obtained from iso-butene by oligomerisation. This also produces other isomers. Complete separation is possible, but not necessary, because the mixture has very similar properties to 2,2,4,6,6-pentamethylheptane.
Application
High-purity isododecane (min. 99.5% 2,2,4,6,6-pentamethylheptane) is used as a reference fuel for determining the cetane number of a diesel fuel; it is a so-called primary reference fuel.
In the polymerization of olefins, isododecane is used as a suspending agent for the catalyst.
Isododecane is a substitute for siloxanes in cosmetics. It is hypoallergenic, odorless, spreads easily and leaves a nourished, silky feel on the skin. Isododecane is non-comedogenic.
